I came across an article in the New York Times about banh mi, the original fusion sandwiches born from colonialism of French baquette and Vietnamese fillings.
I was disappointed to see my favorite shop, Nicky’s, on 2nd and A was left off their list. I have been a loyal customer for years. Nicky’s “classic” sandwiches with pâté,Vietnamese ham, roasted ground pork, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, mayo (and I always ask them to add jalepenos) are single-handedly responsible for helping me finish my last play.
Any writer will tell you that one of the most difficult decisions you can make during the process of plying your trade is what to have for lunch. Maybe that’s just me. Sometimes, when I’m really in the zone, I can’t even bring myself to get up to pee, so it really says something about Nicky’s banh mi if it means I’m willing to get up from my desk and physically leave my apartment to buy one. They also have delivery for those truly on a roll (no pun intended) but you miss out on the Simpsons episodes they play while you wait.
