A sad day for one of the lovliest tea shops in the city. I went to Sympathy for the Kettle, which I’ve always loved for its charm and amazing selection of teas, for an afternoon pot and a place to do some work on my script and to my dismay, found a dozen workmen taking violent swings at the pretty pink interior.
I went to the Crooked Tree across the street for some hot chocolate and the waiter said the Sympathy for the Kettle owners were simply doing renovations and would probably open next week, but I got the feeling I was being told the kind of lie that makes you feel better even if deep down inside you know it’s not true. (Santa Claus is real, Your pet dog is living on a farm somewhere, You burn off as many calories walking as you do running, etc.)
Does anyone have any information about whether or not they’re closed for good? I only found one mention of it in some customer reviews:
The only other decent alternative in the neighborhood is Podunk, which is actually run by a little old lady rather than the hipster beauties in their 20’s who make up the staff at Sympathy for the Kettle. It’s got a lot of its own charm, but no bathroom. “It’s our one flaw,” the owner said to me when she broke the news that, after I drank a pot of tea, there was nowhere for me to go.
